The deployment of Ottobot in Milton Keynes is the latest milestone in DPD’s commitment to innovation. Having already introduced autonomous robot deliveries in locations such as Raunds, Bristol, and Lincoln, DPD continues to lead efforts in reimagining last-mile delivery.
The technology behind Ottobot
The Ottobot is a breakthrough in robotics, designed to handle the complexities of urban delivery. Equipped with a payload capacity of up to 70kg, it features eight independent compartments, allowing it to deliver parcels of various sizes.
A key technical feature is the Ottobot’s four-wheel powered swerve drive, which ensures superior maneuverability. Independent steering and advanced suspension enable it to navigate diverse terrains, including the pedestrian-friendly Redway network in Milton Keynes.
Its navigation capabilities are powered by sensors, including lidars and high-definition cameras, coupled with sophisticated software. These technologies allow the Ottobot to autonomously traverse complex environments, avoiding obstacles and ensuring precise delivery. Compared to earlier autonomous delivery robots, the Ottobot is a leap forward in both functionality and efficiency.
Deployment in Milton Keynes
Milton Keynes, with its traffic-free Redway network, serves as an ideal testing ground for the Ottobot. The city’s pedestrian and cyclist-friendly paths provide a controlled environment for the robot to showcase its capabilities. Operating from the DPD depot in Knowlhill, the Ottobot integrates seamlessly into the company’s existing processes, delivering parcels to nearby residential neighborhoods.
DPD’s earlier deployments of autonomous robots, dating back to July 2022, in cities such as Raunds, Bristol, and Lincoln, laid the groundwork for this rollout. Insights from these projects helped optimize the integration of the Ottobot into daily operations.
The robot’s multi-parcel capability is a standout feature. With the ability to make up to eight separate deliveries per trip and accommodate larger items in its 38-liter compartments, it reduces trips back to the depot, improving efficiency and reducing operational costs.
